Irish Writers' Centre: Creative Writing Courses Programme
Poetry Workshop
Catherine Phil MacCarthy
January 16th / Wednesday mornings / 8 weeks

The course is a deeply interactive workshop between writer and members of the group. The exercises and ‘ways in’ to writing are practical and participants are involved in a process of learning by doing. At the beginning of the course – over the early weeks – a lot of input is envisaged on the part of the director and as the course develops the poems that emerge from the group are central to the process. The course provides a vocabulary and forum for participants to develop a creative and critical eye on their own work and to receive and give criticism constructively. Active reading of contemporary poetry is a crucial part of the course.

Poet Catherine Phil McCarthy reads from Suntrap

Eamon Grennan introduces Irish poet Catherine Phil McCarthy who will read from her third collection of poems, Suntrap (Blackstaff Press, 2006). McCarthy has received numerous prizes including the National Women’s Poetry Competition in 1991 and has been a writer in residence for the City of Dublin and University College, Dublin. Poet Eamon Grennan teaches at Vassar College where he is the Dexter M. Ferry Jr. Professor of English.
